Jaza is a solar energy start-up working to power Sub-Saharan Africa. We build solar-powered shops which charge batteries customers use to power their homes. In 2022, we achieved over 1.5 million battery swaps, providing approximately 186,000 people access to clean, affordable energy. We employ women from each community (known as Jaza Stars) to run the service, empowering our team to become leaders, entrepreneurs and drivers of economic growth within their communities. We’ve already successfully entered the Nigerian market, piloted several sites here and will grow to hundreds of locations over the next year. To support this expansion, we’re planning to hire over 200 people over the next 6 months.

Job Description:

We are seeking a robust, backend-oriented Full Stack Software Engineer to anchor our core operational systems in Lagos. In the high-stakes intersection of Renewable Energy and FinTech, success is defined by "System Stability", the ability to build auditable internal tools, secure payment APIs, and reliable automation engines. This role is designed for a "Pragmatic Architect" with 5+ years of experience who can dedicate 70–80% of their focus to deep backend engineering (Laravel/PHP) and the remaining 20–30% to crafting fast, reactive internal UIs.

Your mission is to ensure "Zero-Failure Financial Flows and Automated Operational Velocity." You will be a vital member of a high-autonomy team: responsible for migrating legacy Python logic into a centralized Laravel ecosystem, managing high-volume data contracts, and automating complex collection and settlement workflows. If you possess "Backend Rigor," proficiency in TALL Stack (Tailwind, Alpine, Laravel, Livewire), and experience with distributed African markets, we want you to drive our energy revolution.

Requirements:

1. Core Backend & Automation Engineering

• Workflow Orchestration: Replace brittle, manual operational processes with robust automation pipelines for collections, device events, and financial settlements.

• API Sovereignty: Design and maintain secure, backwards-compatible RESTful APIs in Laravel to support internal stakeholders and external scale migrations.

• Logic Migration: Identify and migrate critical business logic from Python scripts into the primary Laravel system to ensure code maintainability and performance.

2. System Integrations & Financial Integrity

• Payment Ecosystem Management: Own and optimize integrations with payment providers, Telcos, and mobile money platforms, ensuring "Money-Move" operations are fail-safe.

• Data Contract Stewardship: Define and enforce rigorous data contracts between services to ensure the correctness of financial and operational reporting.

• Queue & Message Governance: Utilize RabbitMQ and Laravel’s queue system to manage event-driven architectures and distributed background tasks.

3. Internal Tooling & Infrastructure Support

• Dynamic UI Development: Build reactive internal dashboards using Livewire and Alpine.js, enabling Ops and Finance teams to manage complex device data.

• DevOps & Reliability: Manage the deployment lifecycle within Docker and DigitalOcean environments, utilizing CI/CD pipelines and monitoring tools like Sentry for proactive bug resolution.

• Scalable Data Architecture: Optimize relational database queries in PostgreSQL and leverage Redis for high-performance caching and session management.

Qualifications and Skills:

The Core Stack

• Backend: PHP 8.x, Laravel (Eloquent, Middleware, Containers), REST APIs.

• Frontend: Livewire, Alpine.js, Tailwind CSS (TALL Stack).

• Data/Queuing: PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ / Asynchronous Job Processing.

• DevOps/Infra: Docker, GitLab CI/CD, DigitalOcean (Droplets, Managed DBs).

• Scripting: Ability to read and modify Python scripts.

Professional Profile

• Experience: 5+ years in full-stack web development with a focus on high-reliability backend systems.

• Industry Edge: Prior experience in FinTech, IoT, or Energy (specifically in African markets) is highly preferred.

• Soft Skills: Fluent English for collaboration across international, distributed teams.
