About Company:

Mastercard Foundation is a global foundation based across four hubs in Kigali, Rwanda, Nairobi, Kenya, Accra, Ghana and Toronto, Canada. Our programs promote financial inclusion and advance education and learning in Africa, primarily for young people, and in Canada for Indigenous youth. The Foundation was established in 2006 through the generosity of Mastercard when it became a public company. From inception, the Foundation was designed to be a separate entity and independent from Mastercard. Our policies, operations, and funding decisions are made by our President and Board of Directors.

Job Description:

We are seeking a visionary Assurance Director to lead our global assurance function. This is a high-influence mandate designed for a strategic leader who ensures that our governance, risk management, and internal control processes are not just compliant, but serve as a catalyst for organizational excellence.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee, you will serve as an independent, objective advisor to executive leadership. You will safeguard the Foundation’s assets and mission by identifying execution risks and driving process efficiencies across high-growth, multi-currency environments. If you possess 15+ years of experience and the courage to uphold rigorous standards in complex global contexts, we invite you to strengthen our foundation.

Requirements:

1. Strategic Audit Leadership & Governance

  • Audit Strategy: Develop and execute a risk-based annual audit plan and internal audit charter that aligns with the Foundation’s strategic objectives and global best practices.

  • Governance Oversight: Lead independent assessments of governance and internal controls across all functional areas, ensuring the maturity of professional skepticism and objectivity.

  • Policy Advisory: Advise on the enhancement of organizational frameworks, including data security, segregation of duties, and financial reporting integrity.

2. Risk Management & Control Evaluation

  • Root Cause Analysis: Design and execute audits and investigations to address material risks, identifying control gaps and providing actionable remediation timelines.

  • Fraud & Ethics: Assess and improve fraud risk management, whistleblower processes, and ethics compliance through active cross-functional engagement.

  • Remediation Monitoring: Track management’s progress on implementing recommendations, ensuring that identified deficiencies are resolved with structural permanence.

3. Executive Stakeholder Engagement & Talent Leadership

  • Board Liaison: Prepare and present concise, high-impact dashboards and reports for the Audit Committee and Board of Directors.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Legal, and external assurance providers to ensure unified standards.

  • Team Mentorship: Recruit and coach a high-performing global audit team, conducting resource planning and talent evaluations to enhance performance.

Qualifications and Skills:

Professional Profile

  • Education: Master’s Degree in a relevant field (Finance, Business, or Management).

  • Certifications: Mandatory accreditation with a recognized institute (e.g., CIA, ACCA, CPA, or ICAN).

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years overall experience, with at least 10 years in senior internal audit and 5 years at management level.

  • Sector Expertise: Experience in the development sector and working within high-growth, multi-jurisdictional, and multi-currency environments is highly valued.

Core Competencies

  • Strategic Mindset: Ability to blend technical audit expertise with pragmatic applications tailored to the Foundation's varied global contexts.

  • Integrity & Courage: The confidence to uphold convictions and navigate ambiguity in challenging, high-pressure situations.

  • Global Fluency: Deep cultural sensitivity with a proven ability to engage diverse Pan-African and international stakeholder groups.
