Job Description:
- The Vice Principal supports the Principal in the leadership and day-to-day running of all academic and training activities at SeaLearn Academy.
- The role ensures that all education and training programmes are delivered to the required standards under STCW, meet the requirements of NIMASA, and align with international expectations including those of other recognised maritime bodies.
- The post holder plays a key role in maintaining training quality, regulatory compliance, operational discipline, and the overall reputation of the Academy.
- This includes oversight of staff, students, systems, facilities, and industry engagement, while supporting the long-term development of SeaLearn as a credible maritime training institution in West Africa.
- The responsibilities below reflect the scope of the role and should be read alongside the Academy’s operational and regulatory obligations.
Key Responsibilities
Academic leadership and training delivery:
- Support the Principal in managing all training activities across the Academy.
- Ensure all courses meet STCW requirements and are delivered to a high standard.
- Keep curriculum, syllabi, and course content current and relevant.
- Ensure training prepares officers and ratings for modern ship operations.
- Review programmes regularly and support introduction of new courses.
Regulatory compliance and approvals:
- Ensure full compliance with NIMASA approvals and requirements.
- Maintain alignment with other international standards.
- Ensure all approvals, affiliations, and accreditations remain valid.
- Support inspections, audits, and regulatory reporting.
- Monitor regulatory changes and implement updates.
Quality assurance and management systems:
- Maintain and improve the Academy’s quality management system.
- Ensure procedures are followed and records are complete and audit ready.
- Identify and close out non-conformities in a timely manner.
- Support continuous improvement across all training activities.
Teaching, simulation and training standards:
- Oversee delivery of classroom, practical, and simulator-based training.
- Ensure simulators and equipment are properly maintained and used effectively.
- Keep training systems and scenarios up to date.
- Ensure instructors are qualified and current.
Assessment, records and certification:
- Ensure assessments are properly designed, conducted, and recorded.
- Maintain secure and accurate assessment records.
- Ensure integrity of examinations and marking processes.
- Ensure all certificates issued are accurate, compliant, and traceable.
- Maintain a secure register of certificates issued.
Student management and welfare:
- Oversee admissions, attendance, and discipline.
- Ensure fair handling of complaints, appeals, and conduct matters.
- Meet trainees periodically and act on feedback.
- Ensure student wellbeing and readiness for training.
Health, safety and environment:
- Ensure a safe training environment at all times.
- Enforce safety procedures in all practical and high-risk training.
- Promote safe working practices for staff and students.
- Ensure protection of people, assets, and the environment.
Staff management and development:
- Supervise academic and support staff.
- Ensure staff are competent, qualified, and developed.
- Address performance issues and maintain standards.
- Promote a disciplined and accountable work culture.
Training materials, systems and LMS:
- Ensure all training materials and manuals are current and controlled.
- Maintain proper document version control.
- Ensure the Learning Management System is fully used and up to date.
- Maintain accurate academic and operational data.
- Ensure appropriate cyber security standards are in place.
Industry engagement and training needs:
- Liaise with technical, operations, and QHSE teams to identify training needs.
- Develop and deliver training aligned to company and industry requirements.
- Monitor effectiveness of training through feedback and performance data.
- Support planning for future training needs.
Marketing, recruitment and external engagement:
- Support marketing, advertising, and sales of courses.
- Promote programmes to students and industry stakeholders.
- Represent the Academy at conferences, seminars, and official meetings.
- Support student recruitment and course utilisation.
Governance, reporting and stakeholders:
- Support reporting to management, including annual training reports.
- Engage with key stakeholders and maintain relationships.
- Participate in committees and industry forums as required.
Operations, planning and resources:
- Support planning and daily operations of the Academy.
- Ensure facilities, simulators, and infrastructure are fit for purpose.
- Improve planning discipline and operational efficiency.
- Identify resource needs and support implementation.
Financial and resource management:
- Support preparation of budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor use of financial and manpower resources.
- Ensure cost-effective delivery of training.
- Contribute to infrastructure and investment planning.
Reputation and institutional development:
- Support development of SeaLearn as a leading maritime training provider.
- Build relationships with regulators, industry, and academic partners.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives and future training development.
- Uphold the reputation and standards of the Academy.
General:
- Be available for occasional weekend duties as required.
- Travel locally and overseas in support of operations and partnerships.
- Undertake any other duties as required by the Principal or Top Manage
Requirements:
- Experience: Typically 8–15+ years in maritime, training, or academy leadership roles, with progression into management
- Maritime Expertise: Strong background in maritime training, seafaring, or shipping operations, with deep understanding of STCW standards and industry practices
- Regulatory Knowledge: Proven experience working with or under NIMASA and familiarity with international maritime regulatory frameworks and audits
- Academic & Training Leadership: Experience managing training programmes, instructors, and curriculum in a maritime or technical training environment
- Quality & Compliance Management: Solid track record in quality assurance systems, audits, and maintaining accreditation standards
- Operational Leadership: Ability to oversee day-to-day academy operations, including staff, students, facilities, and training delivery
- Assessment & Certification Oversight: Strong understanding of examination integrity, certification processes, and record management
- People Management: Experience leading multidisciplinary teams, driving performance, and maintaining discipline and standards
- Technical & Systems Awareness: Familiarity with simulators, LMS platforms, and training systems used in maritime education
- Industry Engagement: Strong network or ability to engage with shipping companies, regulators, and training stakeholders
