Job Description:
We are seeking a skilled and intellectually curious Research Writer to transform complex ideas into compelling academic papers, white papers, and global thought leadership content. This role is designed for a writer who can navigate the nuance of African governance, development, and indigenous knowledge systems while translating findings for diverse audiences—from peer-reviewed journals to international media outlets.
Whether you are a PhD candidate looking to apply your expertise or a seasoned policy writer with a robust publication record, this role offers the platform to influence global narratives. You will work at the intersection of scholarship and advocacy, ensuring that research doesn't just sit on a shelf, but actively shapes policy and public opinion.
Requirements:
1. Scholarly & Policy Production
White Paper Development: Research and author deep-dive papers on governance and development, specifically highlighting indigenous knowledge systems.
Academic Co-authorship: Draft and refine peer-reviewed articles and policy-focused publications that meet international academic standards.
Grant & Proposal Support: Provide critical research and data-backed narratives for fundraising proposals and donor engagement materials.
2. Thought Leadership & Public Discourse
Media Engagement: Write persuasive op-eds, briefs, and thought leadership articles for mainstream and international media organizations.
Insights Newsletter: Conduct desk research to produce regular content for the organization’s Insights newsletter, keeping stakeholders informed on emerging trends.
Presentation Support: Curate research findings for high-level conferences, policy forums, and stakeholder events.
3. Collaborative Research & Mentorship
Ecosystem Collaboration: Partner with internal teams and a network of external global researchers to produce multi-disciplinary work.
Knowledge Transfer: Provide guidance and research support to junior researchers and interns, fostering a culture of academic rigor.
Strategic Support: Work closely with senior leadership to align research outputs with the organization's long-term mission and policy goals.
Qualifications and Skills:
Professional Profile
Education: Bachelor’s degree in African Studies, Political Science, Development Studies, Economics, or a related field.
Advanced Standing: A Master’s or PhD (completed or in progress) is a significant advantage.
Proven Track Record: Demonstrated evidence of publications (academic journals, policy briefs, or recognized media outlets) is essential.
Core Competencies
Dual-Track Writing: The ability to switch between dense, technical academic prose and accessible, engaging narratives for a general audience.
Thematic Expertise: Working knowledge of African governance structures, development economics, or indigenous knowledge systems.
