Job Description:
We are seeking a proactive and technically proficient Agronomist to anchor the crop production strategy for our 150-hectare farm in Zaria. This is a critical recovery and growth role; your primary objective is to reverse previous low yields and achieve a 20–30% yield increase within two seasons for rice, maize, and soybeans.
As the technical lead on the ground, you will move beyond traditional farming to implement data-driven agronomic protocols. You will be responsible for soil health architecture, precision input management, and the establishment of demo plots to showcase our agricultural inputs. If you have 3+ years of experience in large-scale mechanized farming and a "zero-waste" approach to crop nutrition, we invite you to lead our productivity turnaround.
Requirements:
1. Soil Health & Precision Nutrition
Fertility Architecture: Conduct biannual soil analysis and fertility assessments, ensuring a 90% implementation rate of your documented recommendations.
Nutrition Programs: Develop precision fertilizer regimes, maintaining a 95% application accuracy rate against recommended nutritional requirements.
Input Optimization: Audit seed, fertilizer, and chemical usage to contribute to a minimum 15% reduction in seasonal input wastage.
2. Crop Protection & Yield Engineering
Growth Monitoring: Track phenological stages and field conditions daily, submitting actionable weekly reports to the Farm Manager to stay ahead of environmental stressors.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Execute robust pest, disease, and weed management programs to keep seasonal crop losses below 5%.
Establishment Excellence: Oversee seed selection and planting depth/density to ensure uniform crop establishment on at least 90% of the farm.
3. Data Analysis & Knowledge Transfer
Yield Forecasting: Lead post-harvest analysis and yield estimation with a variance accuracy of ±5% compared to actual harvest results.
Demo Plot Stewardship: Support the establishment of regional demo plots to validate the efficacy of our fertilizers and inputs to stakeholders.
Field Training: Mentor field staff on modern agronomic protocols, ensuring 90% adherence to best practices in the field.
Qualifications and Skills:
Professional Profile
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related Agricultural field.
Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in medium to large-scale crop production.
Technical IQ: Strong knowledge of mechanized farming, soil fertility, and the specific agronomy of rice, maize, and soybeans.
Analytical Skills: Proficiency in data collection and reporting to drive farm management decisions.
Core Competencies
Problem Solving: Ability to diagnose field issues (deficiencies, infestations) and implement rapid corrective actions.
Communication: Clear verbal and written skills for reporting and staff training.
Resilience: Willingness to work in intensive field-based conditions in Zaria, Kaduna.
